Two examination systems. (1) Three required examinations: Vorprüfung I, at the end of at least 3 semesters; Vorprüfung II, at the end of at least 5 semesters (a Zwischenprüfung is required at the end of the fourth semester in some faculties) and Schlussprüfung, the final examination. (2) Akzessexamen (access exam) after completion of basic course work and required to continue at a higher level; may be given after the first year but usually at the end of the second year.
