Description: Instituted in 1811. Until 2005 degree program based on series of comprehensive examinations taken at different levels of study: (1) preliminary examen philosophicum after first semester; (2) grunnfag (basic courses); (3) mellomfag (intermediate courses) and (4) hovedfag (main courses). In addition storfag (major course after a mellomfag) or semesteremne (a one semester course) were taken. Following Bologna agreement adopted new degree and grading system in 2005. Usual admission requirement is the secondary certificate (vitnemål from videregående skole) (13 years of education).

Magister Artium: 2.5-3 years beyond lower candidatus.
Master's: (after 2005) 1.5-2 years.
Doctorate: 3 years after master's or professional degree.
