Description: Instituted in 1876 as an agricultural college. Became part of Tohoku University but in 1918 became independent. Acquired current name in 1947. One of the larger institutions in Japan. A national school with rigorous admission standards. There are 95 national universities, one in each prefecture. Usual admission requirements are high school graduation (12 years of education), JFSAT (Joint First Stage Achievement Test) and further examination.
