Description: Instituted in 1959. Became an "institution of national importance" in 1962. The IITs are the best engineering schools in India. Admission is selective. Admission requirements are a 12 year examination and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), a competitive national examination for admission to all seven IITs.
