Description: Instituted in 1472. A traditional university. Besides degree programs provides coursework for professional preparation in law, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, food technology and teaching. In these fields the state (länder) serves as the official examining body. Usual admission requirement is the reifezeugnis (secondary school certificate) (grade 13).

On semester system but assessment of student's performance from course marks is of limited value. When available course grades are reported as numeric marks or verbal mentions. Often courses are passed with success, "mit erfolg". Intermediate and degree examination results have more weight.

Promotion (Doctorate): Minimum of 8 semesters after first degree; by research, dissertation and oral examination. Document verifying completion of program is called Promotionsurkunde.
